Cholera Outbreak Out of Control in Several Zones of Oromia: Hundreds Perished, While Wayyaanee Denied Access to the Affected Areas

(OLF News, August 16, 2009) Reports we received from different zones of Oromia revealed that a cholera epidemic is killing hundreds of people.

The areas of Oromia affected by this cholera epidemic include Western Arsi zone, in the districts of Shashamannee, Kofalee, Arsii Nagallee;Western Shoa zone, in the districts of Fantallee, Boset, Adaamii Tulluu; Northern Shoa zone, in the district of Warra Jaarsoo; in Western Harargee zone, in the districts of Mi’eesso, Gubbaa Qorichaa, Ciroo and other surrounding districts.

In the last month, about 1, 700 people have been caught by the epidemic in Western Arsi zone among which more than 28 of them lost their lives.  In Western Haragee zone in the districts of Ciroo, mi’eessoo and Gubbaa Qorichaa about 220 people were reportedly caught by the epidemic among which it is known that 5 have perished. While this report only includes little parts of areas, which are relatively near the cities, the number of people affected by the disease in areas and districts far from the cities where transportation is not available is much more, our reporters added.

Our reporters added that the TPLF led regime in Finfinnee (Addis Ababa), not only did not pay any attention to contain the epidemic, but also denied access to the area to any one, including humanitarian organizations and independent reporters, exacerbating the problem.
